[:es]Together with the industrial consortium CNG Mobility, Volkswagen aims to multiply by ten the number of vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) in Germany, until reaching around one million units in 2025. At the same time, the number of CNG service stations is expected to expand to 2.000 from the current 860.
The latest registration figures of the German Federal Automobile Transport Authority already show a significant growth of interest in CNG models. Since July 2017, the registration figures have grown continuously. In January 2018, they were 370.7 percent above the equivalent level of the previous year. More CNG models were registered than ever before in a month. This means that the CNG engine is currently the fastest growing power unit.
Jens Andersen, Head of Technological Strategy and Responsible for Volkswagen CNG Mobility, explained: «In the context of the debate on the energy transition and the gradual transfer to sustainable mobility, CNG mobility is able to make a very attractive contribution. Wherever electromobility meets limits, we can offer a cost-effective and immediate alternative to reduce emissions in road traffic.»
