[:es]Nordlaks fishing wellboat LNG-battery hybridNorwegian aquaculture company Nordlaks has commissioned a liquefied natural gas-propelled wellboat, a fishing vessel with a well for the storage and transport of live fish. It will be world’s first LNG Hybrid wellboat, providing significant environmental and climate benefits. Emissions of CO 2 are reduced by 30% and NOx by 90%.
The wellboat, developed by NSK Ship Design in Harstad, will carry live salmon and trout for Nordlaks. It is being built in Turkey at Tersan Shipyard. The wellboat will be 84 meters long and 19 meters wide, and will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology for handling fish and water quality. It will have capacity to carry over 600 tonnes of live salmon.
This is Nordlaks’ second wellboat, stimulated by the company’s desire to introduce forward-looking technology while achieving even safer operation and delivering the necessary capacity for a planned increase in production.
“NSK Ship Design has been working on developing well-boats with LNG propulsion since 2010, and has always had strong faith in the fact that this is the right way to go for the industry. This propulsion system will reduce the operating and maintenance costs for the wellboats and provide a significant environmental gain,” says Thomas Myhre, Sales Manager at NSK Ship Design.
Water quality and fish welfare and the environment have been the main focus of the development process. The wellboat is also designed to operate at aquaculture facilities in more exposed waters, such as Nordlak’s future Havfarmer.
“We see a great potential for LNG and battery packs in wellboats. Next-generation wellboats have a number of power-intensive processes on board, and the logistics and operating patterns of the wellboats make LNG and batteries suitable as power sources, “says Thomas Myhre.
Expected delivery of the wellboat is in February 2020.
