AS Eesti Gaas (Estonia Gas) and Rohegaas OÜ (Greengas) signed a cooperation agreement late last year, according to which Eesti Gaas will purchase approximately 11 million m³ of biomethane from Rohegaas OÜ in 2018 and 2019, for dispensing at its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations. Eesti Gas currently operates 8 CNG filling stations.
“I am very pleased that we will start selling biomethane or green gas in all our gas stations in the new year,” said Raul Kotov, Member of the Board of Eesti Gaas. In the new year, the company plans to open additional sales outlets in Rakvere, Viljandi and Jõhvi.
Biomethane sales will be possible, as Rohegaas OÜ, in cooperation with the wood pulp processing plant operated by Estonian Cell, will establish the Baltics’ first biomethane (renewable natural gas) production unit in Kunda, which will start work at the beginning of the new year.
“Eesti Gaas makes its business decisions in an environmental sense and based on the fact that Estonia has committed itself to covering at least 10% of renewable fuels used in transport in 2020, of which about one third would be biomethane. Therefore the sale of 100% renewable gas is the logical decision for the future,” Kotov added.
Green gas or biomethane is produced from biogas. Biogas is a gas released as a result of fermentation processes, which is a common part of our living environment, consisting mainly of methane and carbon dioxide.
